& the sun is pushing its way up the valley melting the cold out of the night. soft music & her eyes open. cold water splashed on face & the blue eyes smile into the mirror. a good day. it’s gunna be a good day. running up the dark stairs & out into the sun. the tiny calf gets a bottle of hot milk. foamy slobber & puppies licking it up. my heart. big dodge truck roars to life and grasping two bales @ a time the cows run towards her. she smiles. long dusty lines of heads buried in green hay. mountains look over them content. boots & spurs scattered across the ranch house deck. long table full of cowboys and dirty hands. coffee. horses always caught by 1:30 & her favourite shady pine nibbles armidas. grooming his long red mane. he smells good btw. and then thiet running over hills and rivers gathering the herds bringing them to corrals. whoops echo through the woods & friends catch glimpses of bright wild rags waving in the breeze. horses scream & cows call for little ones. she hears an elk bugle in the distant & tries to imitate. clouds of dust billow into the sky as the 500 cows & 15 horses crowd into the corrals. boss yells orders & everyone is busy. tiny calves bawling & dragged to the fire. tiny kids in tiny hats running around giving shots. old grandpas in old hats telling stories & giving sodas. moms with granola bars. the branding irons red wth heat. this cowboy life. & then it over. huge meal in the barn. friends & more friends. soccer with jeans & spurs works best i promise. sitting around the fire all the old cowboys telling stories from apparently the good old days. the sun pink falling behind the mountains reaching arms up in wild colours. goodbyes. the horses roll in the dust happy to be done with heavy saddles. the thunder of thier hooves running through the valley. she watches contented. feeding tiny calf again & hugging the soft brown fur. she is blessed. thank you jesus. sleep is welcome.
