a sunburned jeep
with effort
pulls the camper
her tired blue stripes a blur
past green trees
we park in the woods
the air filling my lungs
with nature
a trail of
Birkenstock sandals
down to the river
long hair in braids
topped with hats
their beautiful girls
my cousins
the laughing eyes beckoning
me to follow
i watch the sky
turn from coral to navy
the mountain guarding the earth
from intense colour
maybe he blessed us with adventure
because he knew it brought him close
us and him
and his earth
continuing down the path
i can hear the voices
a stick breaks under my foot
my hands picks bouquets
habit
i am happy here
these girls
this air
and my God
his mountains are watching.
i am once again jessi of fishburn.
but the scratches down the center of my heart are still there.
i haven't forgotten you,
new mexico land of enchantment.
