a fresh morning
but
the sun will defeat the fresh
a hot alberta burning sun
the dewy grass makes my tall boots wet
I worry for thier leather skin
but they are tough
the sunscreen sticky on my forehead
holding my hat on
I am late
kc jim my brother has already caught
a horse for me
he picked my favourite
his sleek coat shimmering
reflecting morning sun
I hug his shining coat
summer makes thier coats so smooth
the sun
the grass
the dirt
the creek
wearing off thier winter hair
up goes my saddle
sailing high
& then down
to rest on the strong back
we drive
my cowboys & me
the gravel road is long & my eyes feel heavy
the mountains are watching
blue sky today
warning the world
it will be a good day
God knew I needed this.
black & white dogs
a blur
biting heels
calves calling for thier mammas
fringes slap against boots
hands slap against skin
scaring bugs
it is so vibrant
bright blue mountains
bright green grass
bright red horse
& when I look down
so many wild flowers
their own colours
vibrant
I find an alberta rose
my fingers avoid the thorns
gently sliding it into my hat band
ahh
ropes swing
waiting to land
on a cows hard head
stretched out
held down
needles slide under leathery hide
we all need medicine
of some kind
the herd is mothered up
the sick ones have been treated
& our tummy's are telling us to follow the trail
back to the truck
the dogs jump onto the bale deck
the horses tied neatly in the trailer
& the cowboys in the cab
granola bar wrappers
water bottles
the trailer bumps over the cattle guard
down the winding driveway
& bumps over the bridge
up the hill
to the barn
where lunch awaits
a good morning
loving this buckaroo life
gifted with a longing
of nothing else.
thankyou jesus.
